The Compact Indoor Solution
O’HARA ENGINEERING SERVICES is one of Ireland’s leading electrical sub-station contractors and this has enabled large multinational equipment suppliers to provide turnkey solutions to the local distribution service operator (DSO) ESB Networks. Indoor GIS Switchgear offers the Distribution Service Operator a solution to power problems inner city areas. Indoor GIS is compact at approximately 1/2 of the size of a standard outdoor Air Insulated sub-station. The switchgear is fully encapsulated and can be installed in over-ground or underground sub-stations. This is main advantage that GIS Indoor switchgear has over its rival technologies. Another advantage that GIS Indoor Switchgear has is that it’s has a relatively quick Installation/construction time. GIS substations have now been built in Artane, Kilmore, Taney, College Park, Pottery Road, Inchicore, Central Park, Miltown, Clonshaugh, Misery Hill and Ballicoolin areas of Dublin with more expected to come online as we look to the future. GIS switchgear is also being looked at as replacement for large existing sub-station sites where space is at a premium.

North Quays 110kV Substation, Dublin
OverviewNorth Quays 110kV sub-station was built as part of the 110kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) station program which has been underway in the Dublin area for over ten years. The project involved the installation of two 20 MVA indoor 110kV/MV transformers with associated switchgear and equipment.
The use of ABB’s ELK Type Switchgear made possible the creation of a very compact solution whilst providing extra capacity to the area. This was partly enabled by the Network Projects East Transmission program. Works at the Inchicore 110kV GIS sub-station (also delivered by ABB & O’Hara Engineering Services) also played a key role in delivering the 110kV loop-in cables and connections on time, in very challenging circumstances. This was crucial to the provision of remote end works and final handover of the substation from ABB to ESB Networks. |
